Schools Relationship Training

Home is where the hurt is but school is where it shows: recognising & managing signs of inter-parental conflict within primary & secondary schools.

NEW Half-day and full-day workshops for primary and secondary school teachers, educational support staff and counsellors.

To enquire about this workshop, please contact: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Evidence reviewed by the Early Intervention Foundation shows that young people who are exposed to conflict between their parents that is frequent, intense and poorly resolved are likely to suffer increased levels of anxiety, depression and aggression; in addition, they may struggle to achieve at school.

Understanding and learning how to recognise and respond to young people’s distress, as well as how to engage with parents affected by relationship difficulties, is therefore crucial if we are to protect their children’s mental health and promote their well-being.

Schools and teachers have been identified by the Early Intervention Foundation as an important access point for detecting young people’s difficulties relating to inter-parental conflict within the home, particularly as it is often manifested in problematic behaviour and adverse social relationships within the school environment.

The Government has recently announced plan to roll-out mental health first aid training in secondary schools; this training will not however include a focus on impact of inter-parental conflict on children, even though a survey of over 42,000 children being seen in Children and Young People's IAPT services has shown that 'family relationships problems' are the biggest single presenting factor, being implicated in over 50% of referrals. This new workshop's focus on the impact of inter-parental conflict on children is therefore timely and will be an important complement to the Government's training.

This half-day or full-day workshop is specifically designed to:

    • help staff better recognise the signs of inter-parental conflict, as well as learn how to respond to and engage children and their parents affected by it;
    • enable school teachers, educational support staff and counsellors to gain a fuller understanding of the nature of inter-parental conflict and expand their skills in dealing with pastoral issues;
    • show how to limit the negative impact of inter-parental conflict on young people;
    • provide members of staff with opportunities to explore their own particular challenges relating to the impact of inter-parental conflict on children and young people within the school environment.

    The workshop will include material on:

    • the links between inter-parental conflict and children’s mental health and life chances, with particular focus on the impact of how conflict is managed and resolved;
    • understanding the dynamics between couples, including the conscious and unconscious reasons partners choose each other and how their idea about relationships, and their own experience of school, may get re-enacted;
    • looking at how family relationships influence child development;
    • inter-parental conflict and how it affects children;
    • looking at the family/school interaction system;
    • case studies;
    • techniques for working productively with parents.

  • Facilitators will include:

    • Honor Rhodes, OBE, Director of Strategic Development, Tavistock Relationships;
    • Dr Damian McCann, Consultant Family & Systemic Psychotherapist & Couple Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist;
    • William Walker, Social Work Consultant to Parents as Partners, and
    • Steve Mulley, Deputy Programme Manager and Groupworker, Parents as Partners.

  • ‘This Tavistock Relationships workshop was an urgently useful, practical discussion of how to respond to the fall-out of parental relationship problems. As a teacher and pastoral leader, I now feel better equipped to deal sensitively and productively not only with the children but also with the issues that the parents might bring to meetings or conversations.’

    Verity Smith, Head of House and Teacher (Pastoral), Highgate School

Parents in Dispute is the name of a programme delivered between 2014 and 2015 by Tavistock Relationships in partnership with Cafcass, and funded by the Department for Work and Pensions as part of the ‘Help and Support for Separated Families Fund’.

The project used a technique called Mentalization Based Therapy - Parenting Together. You can read more about our Mentalization approach here

The Parents in Dispute programme worked with a difficult-to-engage population – namely separated parents who were in entrenched conflict, for whom repeated court intervention had been unsuccessful in resolving conflict or improving their capacity to co-parent effectively.

Research conclusively demonstrates the negative impact which interparental conflict – whether overt or non-acrimonious – can have on children’s mental health. While most parents who separate come to mutually satisfactory arrangements about the care of their children without recourse to the court system, some do not. A minority of these become involved in protracted disputes played out in the family court system, which is very often damaging to the children involved, as well as hugely costly to the taxpayer.

In the majority of cases referred to the programme, we were successful not only in engaging both co-parents but in enabling them to attend sessions together. In the process, we tested the feasibility of Tavistock Relationships specialist intervention model for such parents (Mentalization Based Therapy - Parenting Together), for whom working together therapeutically is frequently found to be highly challenging (both for the parents and the professionals working with them).

Training and supervision in a brief intervention for working with couples 50+ approaching the transition to retirement

We have found that just 4 sessions can significantly improve a couple’s ability to cope with changes in their life*

Introduction

This training in a brief couple intervention is specifically designed to promote resilience in couples during the transition to retirement. The underlying innovative model aims to provide couples with the resources and thinking space to face the changes emerging from a future life together.

What does Couple 50+ focus on?

This brief couple intervention offers:

  • A safe space to begin to think about the transition to retirement
  • An opportunity to begin to address the issues emerging from facing this transition
  • Support in helping couples to draw on strengths and resources in working towards a future life together.

The overall aim of the sessions is to register a process of change for the couple with the therapist helping them identify a recent or expected life change in the context of a retirement, which may be identified differently by both partners and hold the dual states of loss and development during this transition.

  • The four sessions aim to focus on the following four areas:
  1. Noticing change with the couple: Identifying current changes for the couple as they approach the transition to retirement.
  2. Past changes: how have previous transitions and stressful events been experienced by the couple?
  3. Future changes: looking forward, what changes do the couple expect to experience?
  4. Evaluating changes across the model: The end of the intervention, with encouragement and confirmation of what has been achieved, building on resources and looking ahead into the future.

Trainees will also receive key references and a Clinical Handbook for the model, a set of DVDs and structured questions attached to each of the DVDs to be used for homework in sessions 1 to 3, in order to help the couple open up about their concerns.

How does Couple 50+ help clients?

  • Existing evidence from the programme suggests that couples’ confidence in their ability to cope with changes in their life and deal with potentially challenging times ahead significantly improves following this 4-session intervention.

What does the commissioned training offer?

Tavistock Relationships can offer a one-day bespoke, commissioned training for clinical or corporate agencies.  This training is designed for whole services or teams with a view to understanding and working with the couple relationship at a point of prevention, through the transition into retirement.

The Couple 50+ MOT training programme offers:

Part 1:

  • WORKSHOP: One-day training on a brief intervention to help practitioners to work in a brief intervention informed by and evidenced in psychoanalytic theory and behavioural approaches.

AND

Part 2:

  • SUPERVISION: Remote supervision to support your training cases with a senior Tavistock Relationships supervisor
  • Development of skills for this intervention and knowledge of the theoretical basis

Who can commission the training?

Counsellors and therapists who have access to couples aged 50+ and are interested in developing their skills and knowledge in this highly topical area.

If you would like to commission this training or would like to discuss the offer, including fees, then please contact Dr Damian McCann, Head of Projects (020 7380 6092).

We recently ran a national conference on the topic of retirement and later life with leading experts and professionals in this area. You can read more about it here.
