New book from Tavistock Relationships explores parenting and its impact on the couple relationship
Published in Press Releases by Tavistock Relationships on September 17th 2024
Our new book, “Couples as Parents: Explorations in Couple Therapy” is now available for psychotherapists, clinicians and interested parents to offer insight into the different therapeutic approaches taken to support couples who are parents.
Editors Kate Thompson and Damian McCann explore the complex developmental challenge facing all couples who become parents across four broad topics covering preparation for parenting, child development, parental challenges and conflict. Chapters written by world-recognised subject matter experts provide cutting edge thinking around issues such as infertility, sex, raising a disabled child, adoption, baby loss, living alongside teenagers, same-sex relationships and empty nests.
TR’s CEO Andrew Balfour says: “Becoming a parent causes the most seismic change to a couple’s relationship and requires them to work together for the sake of their children. The expertise of TR therapists in helping couples and parents in distress for over 70 years allows us to offer a unique perspective through which to think about parenting in this excellent new book.”
The contributors include Kate Thompson, Damian McCann, Mary Morgan, Martha Doniach, Colleen M. Sandon, Sara Leon, Sonja Vetter, Linsey Blair, Maguerite Reid, Simon Cregeen, Janine Wanlass, Sophie Corke, Honor Rhodes, William Walker, Sarah Ingram and Joanna Harrison.
Editor Kate Thompson explains: “From the impact of the transition to parenthood and the initial decision to have a child, to raising young children and adolescents and what can hamper the successful development of families, ‘Couples as Parents’ offers a comprehensive exploration of the nature and patterns of intimate partner relationships.”
In the Spring Tavistock Relationships will be hosting a series of online lectures entitled ‘Learning from Parent-Infant Psychotherapy’ inspired by themes covered in the book.
Couples as Parents: Explorations in Couple Therapy is the next book in the Library of Couple and Family Psychoanalysis series published by Routledge (July 2024) and available to buy here.
