Exploring affairs and infidelity

Alain de Botton, Juliet Rosenfeld and Susanna Abse in discussion at Freud Museum

We were delighted to welcome over 300 people – in person and online – to our event at the Freud Museum in May. Susanna Abse, an experienced couple psychotherapist, and former CEO of Tavistock Relationships, facilitated this discussion on the topic of affairs with author, philosopher and psychotherapist Alain de Botton and Juliet Rosenfeld who is also a psychotherapist and has recently published a book of true stories of affairs.

Guests enjoyed a wide ranging discussion which covered the possible causes of affairs, the impact of affairs on existing relationships and how this plays out in the therapy room. The speakers also discussed how this area is shrouded in secrecy and as a result how little research had been undertaken into this behaviour.

Alice Jacobs Waterfall, event organiser and head or TR Together which presents TR’s wider CPD programme, commented:

“The purpose of TR Together is to offer a broad spectrum of events for psychotherapists which offer new insight into the challenges they face in their practice. Infidelity is often the driving force which brings couples to therapy so I hope this lively discussion gave our participants some new perspectives as well as a sense that they are part of a wider community of professionals.

“Alain de Botton and Juliet Rosenfeld were both able to offer a deep understanding into this area and I am delighted that Susanna Abse, who has over 30 years’ experience as an individual and couple psychotherapist, was able to bring her own knowledge and expertise to guide the discussion.”
