Published in Press Releases by Tavistock Relationships on June 6th 2023

On 22 May 2023, Tavistock Relationships, the charity helping individuals and couples to have better relationships, hosted a Roundtable event to examine relationship support within faith and multi-cultural groups..

The event was attended by representatives from over 17 organisations, including: Asian Family Counselling; Camp Simcha; Black, African and Asian Therapy Network; Muslim Counsellor and Psychotherapist Network; Holy Trinity Brompton; Muslim Counsel of Great Britain; Centre for the Study of Islam in the UK; Marriage Care; Jewish Women’s Association; Association of Christian Counsellors; Pirzmah; Race Found; Sakoon; Inspirited Minds; JAMI; and the Archbishop’s Commission on Families and Households.

Holly Ingram, Policy & Engagement Officer at Tavistock Relationships, explains:

“Over the past few months, we have been interviewing people from diverse faith groups and multi-cultural backgrounds about their experiences and thoughts on accessing relationship support.

“Following these conversations, we invited experts on relationships and family support from various backgrounds, faiths, denominations and cultures to listen and learn from each other on the topic of relationships, sex, marriage and family life, in an online Roundtable discussion.

“At the event, speakers from a wide range of cultural backgrounds talkedg about their experience of working with ethnic minorities, the stigma and lack of access some communities face and how we can increase inclusivity within our practices.

“The discussion forms part of our ongoing research into the intersection between faith, cultural identity and relationships, to inform our policy objectives, trainings and overall approach to inclusion and diversity. We hope to bring these groups together on a more regular basis, to inform policy and thought leadership around our diversity ambitions.”
Speakers at the Roundtable event included:

  • Myria Khan, founder of the Muslim Counsellor and Psychotherapist Network (MCAPN), and author of Working Within Diversity, outlined the key barriers for minoritised practitioners and clients to access training and therapy and how identity plays a key role in accessibility.
  • Anvita Madan-Bahel, from The Black, African and Asian Therapy Network, a specialist in multicultural psychology and psychosexual and relational therapy, talked about her practice of multicultural psychology and how she formulates cases based on culture and identity;
  • Naomi Glickman and Sarah Myers from JAMI, a Jewish charity supporting people in the Jewish community whose lives have been impacted by mental illness, talked about their work in the Headroom Café, how this benefits the Jewish community and the specifics of working within a community with a wide range of religious observance; and
  • Honor Rhodes, OBE, Director of Strategy and Projects at Tavistock Relationships and leader of the charity’s parental groupwork programme, explored faith as an area of unity, division and the contested identities that can arise in group work settings.
