New Year’s resolution to resolve relationship rifts in 2014

Published in Press Releases on January 3rd 2014

The Tavistock Centre for Couple Relationships (TCCR) is encouraging couples to make a healthy start to 2014, by putting their relationship as the top priority on their New Year’s resolution list.

TCCR Chief Executive Officer, Susanna Abse, said couples should focus on resolving their relationship problems as a way of improving their health and wellbeing in 2014.

“A lot of people list exercise and healthy eating on their New Year’s resolution list, but the state of your relationship is just as important to your health,” Susanna said.

“Current evidence indicates that good relationships have a positive effect on your health. People in happy relationships increase the level of exercise they undertake, and reduce their smoking and alcohol consumption.”

Susanna said that quality relationships also seem to have a remarkable impact on those who have suffered from a serious illness, as research shows that people with stronger relationships are 50 per cent more likely to survive than those whose relationships are weaker.

“The most important New Year’s resolution a couple can make is to invest time and energy into their relationship. For those couples whose relationship is already in trouble, it is important to seek professional help in order to understand each other better and work through the problems you are facing.”
