Thinking about making the career switch from HR to psychotherapy?

Our Student Stories show that people take many different routes to becoming a couple therapist. Amanda had been working in HR for a long time when she decided make a career change and she is now a successful Couple Psychotherapist and Clinical Lecturer at Tavistock Relationships. 

A vocational move

Amanda wanted to move into a more vocational career that involved helping others. Her interests had always been in the psychology, emotional and mental functioning of human beings. She told us:
“I have always been fascinated with how people interact and intrigued by relationship dynamics. As an HR professional, understanding people and workplace relationships is an essential aspect of the job. Increasingly I had become interested in the nature of romantic relationships. My own personal experiences were most definitely an influence on my curiosity.”

Transferable skills

There are features of being an HR professional which transfer into therapy. For example, there are situations when an HR person, like a therapist, is required to remain neutral. Containing emotions, keeping oneself out of the process, clarifying and understanding, all feature significantly in the approach of intermediaries both in the workplace and in the counselling setting.

Therapy has much to offer troubled couples and the benefits can be life changing. It is also a wonderful way to learn about oneself ...

Job satisfaction

A big part of Amanda’s decision to change careers was her belief in the importance of couple relationships. She told us:
“I passionately believe a healthy relationship is key to healthy adults, children and to society. Therapy has much to offer troubled couples and the benefits can be life changing. It is also a wonderful way to learn about oneself, and I came to understand my parents’ relationship and my own relationships better.”
