Published in Blog by TR on 19 May 2026
Our MSc in Psychosexual Therapy is a COSRT-accredited two-year, part-time course. The course is offered by Birkbeck, University of London, with teaching and practical experience provided by the psychosexual therapy training team from Tavistock Relationships.
What makes this MSc in Psychosexual Therapy different to similar programmes?
This course offers a comprehensive approach to sexual and relationship theory and practice delivered by a uniquely diverse team of expert lecturers from Tavistock Relationships.
Over two years, we navigate a wide range of issues, including painful sex, arousal, desire and orgasm issues, alongside broader influences like culture, sexuality, religion, neurodiversity, and trauma. Students will also engage in their own therapy to better attune themselves to the interplay between mind and body alongside a supportive, research-informed learning environment.
The course emphasises a psychodynamic perspective inspired by Tavistock Relationships’ research, focusing on unconscious processes and attachment that can impact relationships and sexual experiences.
How does the program prepare students for clinical careers in psychosexual therapy?
The MSc prepares students for clinical careers in psychosexual therapy by providing opportunities for hands-on clinical placements in NHS and specialist settings. Students gain experience working with diverse sexual difficulties, supported by Clinical Discussion Groups that guide assessment and treatment from a psychodynamic perspective. Ongoing support from experienced tutors ensures continuous development throughout the programme.
What kind of research opportunities or cutting-edge topics can students explore in this programme?
Students on our MSc are able to combine research and clinical practice, centred on a dissertation based on a real clinical case study from their placement. Students explore a wide range of psychosexual issues such as disability, chemsex or sexual compulsivity, fertility, menopause, and ageing, and are encouraged to pursue topics of personal and social relevance. Through projects and presentations, they develop practical, research-informed skills that help them become confident, up-to-date ethical practitioners.
How does Birkbeck support part-time students or those balancing study with work?
This MSc is designed to balance work and home life, with teaching scheduled one weekend per month - Fridays and Saturdays in Year One, then Saturdays in Year Two. This flexible structure allows time for study and clinical placements. Students also benefit from strong learning support services, including the library and academic learning resources.
How does this MSc enhance professional opportunities in psychosexual therapy and related fields?
The combination of academic learning, clinical training and supervised placements provides students with real-world experience and strong career readiness. The partnership between Tavistock Relationships and Birkbeck, University of London, enhances learning and supports professional accreditation. Graduates can pursue careers across therapy, healthcare, and private practice, while developing valuable transferable skills for broader professional growth.
Who can apply
We welcome applications from qualified practitioners with a clinical qualification in psychotherapy, counselling, or counselling psychology from a nationally recognised accrediting body such as UKCP, BACP, or BPS. This course is designed for applicants who can demonstrate the counselling and academic ability needed to thrive at Masters level, including at least 200 hours of supervised clinical practice. Personal qualities such as strong reflexivity, the ability to form and sustain close relationships, and the capacity to reflect thoughtfully on personal experience, regardless of background, are important to be able to engage with the complexity of the work.
