Our Reducing Parental Conflict support offer to local authorities is based on experience

Sarah Ingram, Deputy Director of Strategy and Development at Tavistock Relationships, explains how we have developed support for local authorities informed by our understanding of delivering support directly to parents in crisis.

Our offer to local authorities is based on experience

Tavistock Relationships has created solutions for local authorities built on our years of experience supporting couples and parents. In the past five years we have worked directly with parents through a number of DWP-funded programmes including the Stronger Families programme and the Reducing Parental Conflict programme. In this time we have received some heart-warming feedback from parents. For example, some parents who took part in the Stronger Families (Triple P Enhanced) programme told us:

We will never forget when our son called us into the room and said, 'Inside voice, use your inside voices when you talk to each other'. At three years old he knew the difference and it made us wonder why don’t we? Now, having experienced the parenting programme, we are more organised with a lot of the boys’ routines. These are not set in stone as we find flexibility works better for us. It’s about recognising what the other person needs.

“We argue about things when we haven’t properly communicated with each other, so we are practising checking in - asking how each other is and, more importantly, communicating how we are feeling instead of assuming the other person knows, AND using our inside voices.

In contrast, a single parent, who was struggling to communicate with her ex-partner, took part in our Reducing Parental Conflict programme. She told us:

This course was significant as it helped me to resolve the difficulties in communication as a co-parent. The sessions enabled me to think about how to write to my ex-partner in a way that enabled him to respond without anger - so much better for our children. This helped me to try different ways to reach my ex-partner and it certainly widened my perspective. I would like to thank my facilitator, who has led me through the sessions and made sure I would understand fully. I am so glad I was given the opportunity to take part.
