Carol and Nina

The issue

Carol and Nina were unsure whether to continue their relationship. Carol had recently had a relationship with another woman and Nina wasn’t sure she could forgive her and resume their partnership.

The process

At their initial assessment it became clear that Carol was still seeing the other woman and that she too was unsure how to go forward. The counsellor suggested they came back for a second assessment to think things through further and to explore whether they did in fact want to have therapy together. Nina came on her own for the second assessment, since having talked things through, she and Carol had decided to split up. Nina wanted to understand why things had gone wrong and why she had lost interest in Carol sexually after the initial romance. She therefore began regular counselling two weeks later, and saw her counsellor for eight sessions.

The outcome

At the end of her therapy Nina wrote: “Thank you TR for saving my life at a very difficult time. You were really there when I needed you. Some of it has been very tough but I know that without your help I wouldn’t have got through. I feel I’ve gained a great deal of understanding about why my relationship went pear-shaped which I hope will help me in the future.”

Nina also wanted to understand why things had gone wrong and why she had lost interest in Carol sexually after the initial romance. Nina began regular counseling two weeks later. She saw her counsellor for 8 sessions. This is what she said on her form at the end of counselling. “Thank you Tavistock Relationships for saving my life at a very difficult time. You were really there when I needed you. Some of it has been very tough but I know that without your help I wouldn’t have got through. I feel I’ve gained a great deal of understanding about why my relationship went pear shaped which I hope will help me in the future”
