Carol and Nina’s Story

Published in Counselling Stories on October 13th 2021

Carol and Nina phoned Tavistock Relationships to ask about some counselling because they were unsure whether to continue their relationship.

Carol had recently had a relationship with another woman and Nina wasn’t sure she could forgive her and resume their partnership. They came for an assessment session where the counsellor explored the issue with them. At this assessment it became clear that Carol was still seeing the other woman and that she too was unsure how to go forward. The counsellor suggested they came back for a second assessment to think things through further and to explore whether they did want therapy together.

At the second assessment Nina came on her own. Carol and Nina had talked things through after the first assessment and decided to part ways. Carol had moved out three days before and Nina told the counsellor that she felt very anxious and unhappy because she had hoped that things would improve between them. The counsellor suggested that Nina have some sessions on her own so that she could get some support with the ending of the relationship.

I feel I’ve gained a great deal of understanding about why my relationship went pear shaped which I hope will help me in the future

Nina also wanted to understand why things had gone wrong and why she had lost interest in Carol sexually after the initial romance. Nina began regular counseling two weeks later. She saw her counsellor for 8 sessions. This is what she said on her form at the end of counselling. “Thank you Tavistock Relationships for saving my life at a very difficult time. You were really there when I needed you. Some of it has been very tough but I know that without your help I wouldn’t have got through. I feel I’ve gained a great deal of understanding about why my relationship went pear shaped which I hope will help me in the future”
