Frequently-asked questions

What is your fee structure for relationship counselling?

Tavistock Relationships is a not-for-profit training institution specialising in relationship counselling and psychoanalytic practice.

We work with couples and individuals. Our fees are set on the basis of two people attending therapy together and charges are invoiced jointly to the couple where this is applicable.

We are highly trained and experienced couples therapists and use a range of methods to support our clients. Some of our services are provided by therapists in advanced psychotherapy training under the supervision of a highly qualified and experienced clinician.

We operate an accessible service for those who would not otherwise be able to access relationship counselling or individual therapy.

Initial consultation

The initial consultation is an in-depth assessment of your needs. Clients find the initial consultation beneficial, even when they do not continue into ongoing therapy with us. Initial consultation appointments cost £100.

When possible, we offer some initial consultations at £50 for people unable to afford the standard fee. You can also contact us via this enquiry form if £50 is not manageable for you or there are no lower cost consultation sessions available.

Any profits from our work are used to support the delivery of our charitable activity primarily the operation of our low fee service.

Fees for services are priced based on our three service offers:

Accessible Services:

We provide services on a full sliding scale.  The session fee will be discussed and agreed with you in your initial consultation, based on your family income and means.

Our Main Clinical Service: Standard fee (UK clients)

We provide services on a full sliding scale.  The session fee will be discussed and agreed with you in your initial consultation, based on your family income and means.

Our standard fee is £100 for daytime sessions during the week, with evening, Saturday and early morning appointments priced at £120.

* As a charity, we invite clients who wish to, to contribute an additional amount, where they can afford to do so. Any discretionary payment is a tax-deductible charitable donation and eligible for gift aid.

Direct Booking Service (UK and International Clients) Higher fee

These rates reflect the specialist training and broad experience of the therapists providing the services. Sessions in higher demand time slots are priced at the higher end of the range.

Note: International work

Therapists staffing the direct booking service, working with international clients, have undertaken further specialist training in this area. The £180 rate applies. International rates apply where one or both clients are outside of the UK.

Missed Appointments

If your schedule changes and you are unable to attend your booked appointment and provide us with seven days' notice of this, we can transfer your payment to a new appointment slot.

Ongoing work

In many circumstances, work with clients will continue beyond a 12-month period. Where this is the case, an inflation related price adjustment may be made.

Given the ongoing nature of couples therapy, there may be times when we can discuss the fee with you in response to a change in your financial circumstances and adjust it accordingly so that the therapy work can continue.

Cancellations and therapist holidays

Because your therapy is a regular weekly session which is reserved just for you, we will charge you if you miss or cancel a session. If the therapist cancels a session for any reason, you will not be charged.
The therapist will give you advance notice of any upcoming breaks or holidays they are taking, which for the most part you should expect will be at Christmas, Easter and during the summer period.

For UK based clients, we offer the following payment options:
• Weekly Invoicing - each week an invoice will be sent to you on the day of your appointment. Payment is due immediately upon receipt.
• Monthly invoicing - you will be invoiced at the start of each calendar month for all appointments scheduled that month. Payment is due by the 15th of each month.

For international clients we require direct debit agreements to be in place authorising us to make a charge against your nominated account for the invoiced amounts.
