Reaching the nation with relationship counselling, via a popular daytime television show.
Three of our therapists, Marian O’Connor, Clodagh Tallon and Joanna Harrison took time from their clinical work to take part in a partnership exercise between Tavistock Relationships and ITV daytime television programme, This Morning.
As part of a special January relationship help feature, viewers from across the UK were encouraged to call in to the programme, as part of a feature hosted by resident Agony Aunt Deirdre Sanders, about challenges with their relationship. Hundreds did so, and when they did, many were referred for expert couple therapy to our trio of professionals.
Of the event, Marian O’Connor, one of the team, said:
“It was an enriching experience. Many callers had been living with relationship conflict or dissatisfaction for years but felt there was nowhere to turn. Several said problems had been exacerbated during the lockdowns. We were able to offer guidance about where to turn for longer-term help, thoughts on better ways of communicating and an opportunity to look at the relationship from an outside perspective.”
The work highlighted the value of Tavistock Relationships’ mission to ensure effective relationship support is accessible to all, and the depth of need of counselling advice across Britain’s households was revealed from the activity.
