Free help is available for parents who are having trouble communicating and worried about the effect on their children, based on principles that have been proved to benefit relationships and family life.
PRESS RELEASE April 16, 2020
Research says that couples and their children need help with family relationships during lockdown and that family life can really improve.
Research from the Nantong Municipal Health Committee in China, ‘What to do when the family fire ignites during the epidemic’, points out that having psychological support during lockdown has a very positive impact on couples and their children.
The report from China also shows that many more parents have asked for skilled help and support for their relationships in recent months and it has helped them work together better and enjoy family life more, making their children happier.
Tavistock Relationships delivers a free programme to support parents in many parts of London and the South East. The programme, launched earlier this year, has switched online in response to the pandemic, and offers support to parental couples, living together or apart, and for parents who are separated or divorced, to help with the pressures they are trying to manage in their relationship with each other.
Sarah Ingram leads the ‘Building Relationships for Stronger Families’ programme for Tavistock Relationships and believes demand for this free support is likely to rise as lockdown continues in the UK:
“Lockdown has taken away our daily structure and routine and put families together with no opportunity for separation, and no certainty as to when these circumstances will change. Fracture lines are inevitable and the chance to work through these problems – outside the home, with friends or other loved ones - has been taken away.
“Lots of parents are finding sharing space, chores, making time for themselves and each other very hard at the moment, and worry that their children are noticing arguments.
“Parenting can be tough for any of us at the best of times, but right now having the support of trained professionals can be really helpful for families. Individuals – whether together with their partner or separated – can apply for this free support on our website or by giving us a ring and we will arrange an online meeting at a convenient time for you.”
Couples and families can check if they live an area which qualifies for this free support, and apply direct at https://www.tavistockrelationships.org/free-services or by calling 020 7380 1960.
