Increase in demand outlines willingness of public to seek psychotherapy as effective help and suggests the message of the importance of relationships for families and mental health is becoming clear.

Demand for couple therapy continues to rise
Tavistock Relationships, the internationally renowned charity providing couple therapy has published its annual report today (30 September 2019), showing over a fifth (21%) increase in the number of therapy sessions delivered by the charity over the last three years.
Studies show that relationships matter to the mental health and the welfare of children.
Andrew Balfour, Chief Executive of Tavistock Relationships, explains: “Greater public awareness of the effectiveness of psychodynamic therapies in improving mental health have increased demand for couple therapy, so more therapists trained in this area are required to meet the demand.
“Of the 1,500 specially trained couple therapists currently practicing in the UK, just under 1,000 were trained by Tavistock Relationships. We are calling for more people to train to become couple therapists so that we can provide more of this highly effective form of psychotherapy.”
In its 2018-2019 annual report, Tavistock Relationships shows that 64 per cent of its clients within the clinical range at intake to its service demonstrated ‘clinical recovery’, by the end of therapy. Clinical recovery’ in related sectors, such as NHS psychological therapy services, is 49.3 per cent nationally.
Andrew Balfour adds:
“As well as 64 per cent of our clients demonstrating ‘clinical recovery’ by the end of their therapy, we see improvements in the quality of relationships during therapy and a steady increase in relationship satisfaction throughout therapy.
“In addition, couples with children reported a significant decrease in children’s behavioral problems from beginning to the end of therapy.”
Tavistock Relationships’ Online Therapy Service more than doubled from 2018 to 2019, delivering a total of 1,170 sessions. This service aims to increase the accessibility of the charity’s clinical services to those living outside London.
Tavistock Relationships’ therapy fees are charged according to capacity to pay, with no minimum fee, so that anyone can accessTavistock Relationship’s services, whatever their financial circumstances.
In addition to offering counselling and psychotherapy, Tavistock Relationships runs professional training programmes in couple psychotherapy ranging from introductory to doctorate level.
