New mental health and well-being centre to open for workers and residents in the City of London

Our service expands from couples therapy and marriage guidance to wider mental health support.
Funded by the City of London Corporation, a new mental health and well-being centre for city workers and residents will open in the autumn.
Counselling and psychotherapy service at the new City Wellbeing Centre will be available to people who are experiencing a range of emotional difficulties and relationship problems, with subsidised, low cost support available for workers on low incomes.
The London-based charity Tavistock Relationships – which has more than 70 years’ experience of helping individuals and couples with mental health difficulties and relationship problems – has been commissioned by the City of London to deliver the service.
Andrew Balfour, chief executive of Tavistock Relationships, explains:
“This vital new service is designed to enable City residents and workers to access psychological help for emotional difficulties and relationship problems which are damaging their mental health.
“The service will chart new territory in providing, in one local centre, a range of talking therapies, both brief and longer-term, which have, in recent years, become harder for people to obtain outside the private sector. The mix of online and face to face options will help to ensure wide access to these services from workers and communities across the City.
“As people are grappling with the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, which has hit Londoners particularly hard, our new service will give people the chance to address difficulties such as depression, anxiety, struggles with family or work life, sexual problems, self-esteem issues and life transitions such as moving towards retirement.
“Although we have only just started to gather information about the ongoing impact the situation is having, early indications suggest that emerging from the lockdown will be a difficult transition for many, presenting challenges for our mental health and wellbeing.”
As a non-profit organisation, Tavistock Relationships provides relationship support whatever someone’s financial circumstances and subsidised support is available for people living on low incomes, with the aim of helping to tackle health inequalities, and the service is available to City workers and residents, as well as people living in neighbouring boroughs.
Randall Anderson, Chairman of the City of London Corporation’s Community and Children’s Services Committee, said:
“Supporting good mental health among our residents and workers is a key priority for the City Corporation.
“The availability and speed of access to some NHS mental health services can be limited, and some services – such as psychotherapy - are rarely available.
“City residents and workers struggling with mental ill-health will benefit greatly from this new service, with new quick and effective access to professional advice and treatment.”
