Biography

David joined Tavistock Relationships in 1996 with a background in adult mental health social work and training. A Jungian training analyst and consultant couple psychoanalytic psychotherapist, he has taught and supervised on the psychodynamic and the psychoanalytic trainings as well as teaching and supervising internationally. He has a strong interest in links between Jungian and psychoanalytic thinking, creativity, race, and clinical practice and has published over 60 chapters, articles and reviews.

Biography

Stanley Ruszczynski is a psychoanalyst and psychoanalytic couple psychotherapist, a Full Member of BPA, IPA, Guest Member of the BPAS and an Honorary Member of the Polish Association for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. Between 1997 and 2021, he was a Consultant Adult Psychotherapist at the Portman Clinic, part of the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust (including holding the role of Clinic Director, 2005-2016). The Portman Clinic offers psychotherapeutic treatment to patients disturbed by their criminality, violence or damaging sexual behaviours, and teaching and consultancy programmes for colleagues in mental health, criminal justice and social care settings. Between 1979 and 1997, he was a senior member of staff at Tavistock Relationships (including holding the roles of Clinical Co-ordinator and Training Co-ordinator, and, between 1987 and 1993, Deputy Director). He has taught extensively in the UK and abroad and over the last ten years, together with Mary Morgan, has established the practice of psychoanalytic couple psychotherapy in Poland. He has authored many book chapters and articles, and is a contributory editor and co-editor of five books. He now has a private practice as a psychoanalyst, a psychoanalytic couple psychotherapist and teacher.

Biography

Mary Morgan is a Psychoanalyst, Consultant Couple Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist, Fellow of the British Psychoanalytical Society and Honorary Member of the Polish Society for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. She is a consultant to the IPA Committee in Couple and Family Psychoanalysis. Until recently Mary was the Reader in Couple Psychoanalysis and Head of the MA in Couple Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy at Tavistock Relationships. She has written extensively in the field of couple psychoanalysis and teaches and supervises internationally. Her book: ‘A Couple State of Mind: Psychoanalysis of Couples – the Tavistock Relationships Model’ was published recently by Routledge and has been translated into Polish, Russian, Italian and Chinese.

Biography

Philip A. Cowan, Ph.D., is a professor of psychology, emeritus, at the University of California, Berkeley. He co-directed and trained facilitators in three longitudinal intervention studies with partners who are parents in the U.S., the United Kingdom, and Malta. He is a former director of the Psychology Clinic and the Institute of Human Development at UCB, co-author of many studies of couple relationships, and co-author of When Partners Become Parents: The Big Change for Couples (2000) with Carolyn Pape Cowan.

Biography

Professor Brett Kahr has worked in the mental health profession for over forty years. He is a Senior Fellow and a Visiting Professor of Psychoanalysis and Mental Health at Regent's University London. He is also Honorary Director of Research at Freud Museum London, a Consultant in Psychology at The Bowlby Centre and a Consultant Psychotherapist at The Balint Consultancy. Professor Kahr has worked with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy since its foundation in 1993 and has served on its Board of Trustees and, also, as its Special Media Adviser. He also holds the post as Chair of the Scholars Committee of the British Psychoanalytic Council. Formerly Resident Psychotherapist at the British Broadcasting Corporation, he consults widely to the media. In 2021, he became an Honorary Fellow of the U.K.C.P. Professor Kahr is the author of eighteen books, including the newly-published Hidden Histories of British Psychoanalysis: Unearthing Freud’s Death Bed and Laing’s Missing Tooth, which includes an archival exploration of the life and work of Enid Balint, who founded the Family Discussion Bureau (the precursor organisation to Tavistock Relationships) back in 1946.

Biography

David Scharff, M.D is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Georgetown University, as well as at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He is also Co-Founder and Former Director of the International Psychotherapy Institute; former Chair of the International Psychoanalytic Association’s Committee on Family and Couple Psychoanalysis; and editor-in-chief of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy in China. He directs training programs in analytic couple and family therapy in Beijing and Moscow. Scharff is a 2021 recipient of the Sigourney Award for pioneering work in psychoanalysis.

Biography

Dr Jill Savege Scharff is an internationally known psychoanalyst for children and adults, couples and families. She is the co-founder and former co-director of the International Psychotherapy Institute (www.theipi.org) where she is now a board member emeritus and frequent contributor to the blog. She was the founding Chair of the International Institute for Psychoanalytic Training, the analytic training program at the International Psychotherapy Institute, where she also developed an analytic supervision training program, a child therapy and child analytic curriculum. She is a teaching analyst at the Washington Center for Psychoanalysis and a clinical professor of psychiatry at Georgetown University. Scharff is a 2021 recipient of the Sigourney Award for pioneering work in psychoanalysis and author and editor of books including Psychoanalytic Couple Therapy.

Biography

Christopher Clulow is a Consultant Couple Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist registered with the British Psychoanalytic Council. He is a Senior Fellow of the Tavistock Institute of Medical Psychology, a Fellow of the Centre for Social Policy, Dartington, and an Honorary Member of the International Attachment Network. He worked as a probation officer before joining Tavistock Relationships in 1974 (then known as the Institute of Marital Studies) where he served as Director from 1987 to 2006. He chaired the International Commission on Marriage and Interpersonal Relationships of the United Nations registered International Union of Family Organisations from 1986 – 1994. He has published extensively on partnerships, parenthood and couple psychotherapy, and was awarded an academic doctorate on the basis of this work. The most recent of his twelve books are Engaging Couples. New Directions in Therapeutic Work with Families (published by Routledge and co-edited with Andrew Balfour and Kate Thompson in 2019), Couple Therapy for Depressions. A Clinicians Guide to Integrative Practice (published by Oxford University Press and co-authored with David Hewison and Harriet Drake) and Sex, Attachment and Couple Psychotherapy: Psychoanalytic Perspectives (published by Karnac Books and edited in 2009). Until 2023 he was Editor in Chief of Couple and Family Psychoanalysis and an Editor of the International Review of Couple and Family Psychoanalysis. He remains a Series Editor for the Routledge Library of Couple and Family Psychoanalysis.

Susanna Abse

Biography

Susanna Abse has worked as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist with couples for over 30 years and is Co-Director of the Queen Anne Street Practice in central London. Between 2006-2016 she was the CEO of Tavistock Relationships and from 2018-21, she was the chair of the British Psychoanalytic Council. Currently she is a trustee of the Freud Museum in London and the Association of Infant Mental Health. In 2019, she presented Britain on the Couch, a series of films about Brexit for Channel 4 News. Susanna is a co-editor of The Library of Couple and Family Psychoanalysis for Routledge Books and in 2022 her book Tell Me the Truth about Love - 13 tales from couple therapy was published by Ebury Press. The book will be published in 13 countries across the world sharing the ideas and practice of Tavistock Relationships to a wider audience.

Francis Grier

Biography

Francis Grier is Editor-In-Chief of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis, and a Training Analyst and Supervisor of the British Psychoanalytical Society.  He is also a couple psychotherapist. He works in private practice in London. He leads a seminar for the psychotherapists in the Fitzjohn’s Unit of the Tavistock Clinic, which specialises in working psychoanalytically with patients who would not normally have access to psychoanalytic treatment. He has written and edited papers, chapters and two books on couple psychotherapy, including Oedipus and the Couple (2005, Karnac), and papers for the IJP on two Verdi operas (Rigoletto and La Traviata), on a gendered approach to Beethoven, on musicality in the consulting room, and on the music of the drives and perversions. Before training psychoanalytically, he was a professional musician. He gave the first ever solo recital at a Royal Albert Hall Proms concert in 1985, and in 2012 was awarded a British Composer Award.
